Additional Info:

Careers in Peacemaking, in Maui , Hawaii,  is a non profit volunteer, counter recruitment  organization associated with Maui Peace Action made up of 3 educators who serve at career fairs and most of the 8 public high schools in Maui County.

We have met with much resistance for what we believe is due to Maui  demographics; rural in nature and a majority of the population is Pacific Islander and/or Filipino with a long history of militarism within their families.  Teachers express that because of the No Child Left Behind Act, there is little time to accomodate our presentations in their classes. Given the time constraints, our curriculum is interactive, focusing on recruiter tactics, realities of military life, and alternatives for jobs and college funding. We encourage feedback from students to determine why they would consider joining and what they know about military life and the war in Iraq. Citing department of defense statistics, we present the facts vs military myths. We pass out materials and resources about enlistment and non military alternatives, and show the brief film "Before You Enlist."At Maui Peace Action events, we pass out Opt Out forms for both the private info and the JAMRS-Pentagon data base. We also have public service announcements aired on local public access TV, and local radio stations.

Maui Peace Action recently cosponsored "Maui Artists Against the War", the nation's largest multimedia art exhibit which lasted nearly a month. Besides art, it featured speakers, films, poetry, drama, dance, live music. Our Counter recruitment  group had a table there where we offered materials and resources to attendents. It was such a success, that it will be taking to the road, next stop, Venice California. For summer, we want to attend youth group meetings especially for youth at risk, such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Our goal is to provide information to help students defend themselves against aggressive military recruiting and war.  An important part of our work is to empower young people to take leadership in the counter-recruitment movement and to connect war and militarism with other issues that affect low income youth and youth of color in their communities.

 Additional Information:

MOOS-Bay is a network of organizations and individuals doing counter recruitment education and activism in the SF Bay Area. The work of our members includes campus organizing, classroom education, legislative and policy promotion, cultural activism and nonviolent direct action.

Our goals include limiting the access military recruiters have to high school and college students, exposing the false promises made by military recruiters, promoting financial aid and job training alternatives to the military, and providing information about selective service, the draft, conscientious objection and resistance to war.

MOOS-Bay offers mini-grants to Bay Area high school students who are doing counter recruitment projects in their schools and/or communities. We also operate an email-list to announce counter recruitment-related events.
